Real Wedding: Bethany + Spencer

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… Our Lovelies are NEXT LEVEL.

Bethany said “I Do” to Spencer wearing our Rue De Seine ‘Vita’ boho wedding dress. She was the first bride to ever wear the gown and she will forever go down in history in our books. The thoughtful details of their wedding day are causing us to have major FOMO. Honestly, we had to see the photos to believe it all really happened. From an alpaca guest named Henry to a tattoo bar, the two thought of absolutely everything and more. Oh and by the way, instead of a first dance they sang a duet – we repeat.. SANG A DUET. This wedding looked like it could be straight out of a movie, which is fitting for this filmmaker couple. Check out all of the dreamy deets of their bohemian Malibu wedding and read about their love story below.

Meet Bethany and Spencer

Tell us about you and Spencer as a couple

We were raised in the south and now we live in Los Angeles. We are huge outdoor adventurers, and we make films and music together.

How did he propose?

For our entire relationship, we dreamed of visiting Iceland. For my birthday last year, Spencer proposed to me on the black sand beaches of Vik without another soul in sight and with towering green mountains behind him. It was magnificent.

Describe each other in 3 words

Spencer calls Bethany insightful, driven, and vivacious

Bethany calls Spencer kind, hilarious and massively creative

You were the first bride to ever wear Rue De Seine’s Vita gown! Describe your experience at Lovely Bride LA. How did you know your wedding dress was THE one?

I had admired the designer for years and the moment I found out she was having a trunk show at Lovely Bride LA, I dropped all my plans to be there. Having the designer there while I tried on my dress, along with the special women in my life, was a dream come true. I still get messages every day about how incredible my dress was. I secretly still wear it around the house. Shhh.

Describe your wedding vision. You had so many unique elements! What were a few of them?

With Calamigos Ranch in Malibu as our setting, you really can’t go wrong. I worked tirelessly with my bffs and wedding planners Juniper Sisters for 9 months to make our vision come to life. We wanted our guests to experience everything that we love. We had gifts for them like blankies and hankies, crystals, palo santo, succulents, affirmations in a bottle. Real film photos with Henry the alpaca and tattoos by our favorite artist. We also sang a song together for our guests and the lyrics were the very words we got tattooed on ourselves after our vows.

Tattoos after you say I Do?! We LOVE that. Tell us about that experience. Did guests also get tattoos?

Yes! We picked tattoos that were symbolic to our love and our guests could pick which one they wanted from a flash sheet. It was so cool because now some of our friends and family who didn’t know each other have matching tattoos and are linked together forever by our love.

What song did you two sing instead of a first dance?

We sang the Ballad of Love and Hate by the Avett Brothers, to a room of crying friends and family.

LOVE your bridesmaid dresses. How did you choose the color palette?

I knew I wanted natural. Nature is so important to us. We wanted colors that felt earthy and yet ethereal. We wanted all natural hair and make up and also everyone to be barefoot. We thought it important that people feel themselves and grounded at the ceremony.

What will you remember most about your wedding in 10 years?

There was one moment during our wedding reception where I told myself to just stop and take in the moment. The band (California Feet Warmers) tunes were playing and the lights were sparkling and I was holding my new husband’s hand as he got the tattoo “Yours Forever” on his heart. And in the moment this incredible fog rolled in through the Malibu mountains and it was as if everyone there gasped at the beauty all together. I cried all over again, in pure joy and bliss.
