Real Wedding – Like Mother, Like Daughter

We can’t think a better way to top off fashion week, then to write about a bride with a stellar fashion sense.  At first glance, you’ll see that Kelly McKee-Zajfen looks killer in her butterfly-sleeve, lace minidress.  But the real beauty in her wedding dress choice, was the meaning it held for her.  Grab a tissue and enjoy this gorgeous day captured by Austin & Dara.

Lovely: Tell us about THE dress and what inspired your look
Kelly: It didn’t happen automatically. I had already purchased a dress and was having a ton of fittings for it. I actually asked the designer, my great friend Joanna August for her seamstress to alter my moms dress that was just sitting in my closest. I was conflicted because it was the only thing tangible from her wedding other then the little pin she wore that day. I was SO nervous. But I had just took a trip with my brother to spread her ashes and while I was there going through the last bit of things I found this amazing book she had left for me. She had written in that book “You will be an amazing wife someday.” I felt so sentimental and emotional that when I arrived home to have another fitting for my dress the seamstress had my mothers dress hanging up for me to see. I just melted. No matter how beautiful Joanna’s dress was I just couldn’t of imagined my moms dress to be so modern and chic 36 years later. It was a done deal. The searching for someway for her to be apart of my day was beyond perfect.

Lovely: What were the most important details to pulling off your dream wedding?
Kelly: I really wanted to make sure my day was as easy and fun as possible. I didn’t want to fuss over everything. It was a celebration and a time where all our friends and family were in the same spot. I wanted things to feel homey. So I wanted little tiny details to be the focus. I hand stamped everyones names on the seating charts, I made little clothes pins with hearts, I went to flea markets and found all the mason jars. We wrote really funny and sweet vows that everyone talked about for weeks after. I had local wines and family style dinner. I had a girl make our seed packets with our initial on it and made sure it was “wildflowers” to reflect the ranch. I even made my own Chuppah!

Lovely:  What was the most memorable moment?
Kelly: I go back and forth with a few moments. Julian and I had our own “private time” after the ceremony as a Jewish tradition. We had a bowl of cherries and wine like our first date waiting for us when we got there. We just had this beautiful few minutes of ” Wow, what a beautiful perfect moment.”
And then the second moment was when we were about to be announced. We could hear the commotion behind the barn doors and the DJ getting ready… And then the doors flew open , the light was stunning and we were now Mr & Mrs. to all of our friends and family. Pure Bliss

Lovely: If you could give future brides any advice, what would it be?
Kelly: Don’t be afraid to be creative. I had a lot of fun figuring out details and it can be very intimidating but you really can do a lot for less.

A huge thanks to Kelly for sharing her special day and heartfelt story with us.  It’s a great reminder of what is important in planning the perfect wedding…the sentiment that makes it your own.  To see more of Kelly’s inspirations and wedding day photos, check out her blog To Be Devoted.
